TWO cards previewed today… although that first on may be a genuine spoiler, there was no source. But Brightling was an official preview from Mike Flores.
Today is October 11, 2017. Three years ago today WotC announced the 31 locations worldwide that would be hosting a Regional Pro Tour Qualifier tournament on April 25, 2015. Players competing in the event would receive a promotional foil Liliana of the Veil, the first time the card had seen reprinting.
Incidentally, that RPTQ had one of its locations at my LGS, Kirwan’s Game Store and I convinced Steve to visit the location for the event. It was the first and only time there was an official Ascended Minion Project presence at a Steve Argyle signing.
Minion #307 and Minion #100 attended the even and were given their Ascensions in person and became Ascended Minions #24 and #25 respectively.
The L5R collection is going pretty well! In terms of Steve-collecting I find it a lot more fun than MTG stuff. Since there is so much more and I know virtually nothing about the game everything feels new and exciting. I also really like the look of L5R foils. I need to get my hands on some more and get em signed! Starting to exhaust most of the more well-known sellers so I am going to need to branch-out to fill some gaps.
Let’s talk about the rabbit hole. If you’ve heard the term it can mean many things. Bag of snakes is another good term. My point? That if you want to know about a piece of Steve’s art that isn’t from Magic the research can get daunting.
Finding the piece in the first place was just digging as deep as possible and not missing a thing. There are a lot of Steve’s unpublished pieces in the bowels of the internet and even if you see one you might miss it if it isn’t credited in a searchable way.
This one thankfully had a name where I found it. Searching for Moto Sabukan led me here.
From there I was able to find out who it was made for and why.
“The winner of the 2010 Hitomi Memorial was immortalized in a picture alongside the chosen honored personality by no other than Steve Argyle. Juan “Sabu” Sanchez received a printout of Argyle’s picture during this year’s Kotei’s Award Ceremony. You can see Argyle’s interpretation of Moto Sabukan, as he rides alongside Shinjo Shono”
However, the actual card that was made for the event was actually called Shinjo Sanenari (not Shinjo Shono) and was illustrated by Diego Gisbert Llorens.
Not only that but hovering over a small picture for a second on the one page revealed a hidden artist credit for Steve Argyle…
Hitomi Shujyo, huh? Now what have I gotten myself into? It’s been quite a while since this kind of thing has happened to me. I screen captured the picture and image searched it and found this.
The image appears to be an avatar image for some member of the Legion of the Coqui website named… Hitomi Shujyo… who wrote the post about the tournament I was searching about which indicated that it was November 13, 2010 in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico.
The Legion of the Coqui handled the comunication with Steve apparently and a print was made of the piece that was given to winner Juan Sanchez at the 2010 Kotei Awards Ceremony… and event I can not find any information about.
I just stumbled across this on eBay. Steve’s last-name-only signature on the side of the art is a relic of earlier years and these are the first printings of the five ring cards bearing Steve’s updated illustrations.
If anyone is looking to have a little piece of Steve’s L5R history in their collection this is a solid win. Totally worth thirteen bucks!
I wonder if Steve got to do any new art for the upcoming Eternal Masters collection? Since they got Terese Nielsen to re-do the art for Force of Will, what would be your top three cards for Steve to re-do the art, and that could go in such a set?
I would like to see Steve be tasked with tackling at least one major Vintage/Legacy constructed staple. With both the Reserved List and deliberate draft format in mind I will try and speculate… in no particular order
Mana Drain (moved from Uncommon to Mythic) - one of the most powerful scale-tipping, combo-stopping cards not on the reserved list and in serious need of reprinting. Art direction for such a broad concept could go anywhere.
Dark Ritual (Still at Common) - This is the best mana-boosting bang for the buck not on the reserved list. It has been reprinted a great deal but not recently. It could use an illustration update with our good buddy Liliana. Steve needs to illustrate something with her in it again and go for five times! Besides, I love black decks and this is the ultimate black deck cornerstone.
Armageddon (Still at Rare) - I like this card and used it a lot (and I don’t hold to the public cry against mass land destruction… if I played EDH you’d eat a land nuke from me for sure…) Steve actually illustrated an Armageddon card for another game and I’m willing to bet he would like a second chance at it.
Admonition Angel portrait on an artist proof. Been a while since I’d seen an Admonition Angel proof. She’s much more inviting without a halo and a sword.
Hi vesselofdestruction! I am lucky enough to own the proof
and Steve did the sketch for me at the RPTQ in the Catskills. You can see the
front here along with some others: http://imgur.com/a/ezbWj
As a note I received it blank, purchased on ebay, and there
was some concern in the community that the signature was not Steve’s. Luckily
Steve and Kat cleared it up in-person. Apparently the original owner was very
specific about what he wanted on it, including what pen he would like used,
hence the signature deviates a bit from Steve’s standard signature. - 307 / Ascended 24
Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting Steve, Kat, Justin,
and other minions (especially Minion 100, congratulations on your ascension!) in
Catskill. To say I had an amazing time would be a gross understatement. Thank
you so much to Steve and Kat for coming, signing, sketching, free stuff, bumping
up the time of minion trivia so I could participate, and your dedication to
your fans! It was a true pleasure to meet you both and see you in action!
I also want to give a giant thank you the man who facilitated
all of this… Justin! Your hard work and passion is unparalleled. It was great
to finally meet you and even get to browse through your collection. I felt like
I was at a museum and learned an insane amount about everything Steve-related. Thanks
again for fostering such an awesome community, organizing this event, and for anointing
me Ascended Minion 24! The uncut L5R sheet is such an incredible addition to my
collection and I cannot wait to get it framed and hanging. I simply cannot
thank you enough.
Up till yesterday I have only participated in this community
online. Now things have gotten, quite literally, real. I am as excited as ever
to be part of this and cannot wait to see where it goes in the future. One
final thank you to minions everywhere who help make this community so awesome! - Minion 307 / Ascended 24
Attempting to triage my collection for Saturday in order to maximize time and ensure I do not miss anything I consider “high priority”… this is a lot harder than I expected. - Minion 307
I understand completely! I was doing similar work today. See ya Saturday! - Justin
Thanks! One of the most fun parts for me has been branching off from Magic. Really helped me expand my horizons and learn about other awesome card games I never knew about.
